Play is an important part of the child’s life, so much so that many childhood professionals do not hesitate to make it a kind of “vital function”. Children play because they need it, and we encourage them.

But what about adults? Does this child who has grown up still play? To this question, we answer “yes”, adults play as well but these playful activities remains marginalized. The adult plays, but how is it perceived? Is this normal? And what can these adult games do for people?

Play is one of the central activities of our children’s lives. This “child’s game” is so accepted and standardized that we have made it an expression: “simple as a child’s play! “

There are, however, many types of adult games: rule games such as board games, role plays, puzzles, action games, couple games that will keep the love going and so on. And all these games bring us important benefits. Depending on the kind of game we choose, the contribution will be different:

Strengthen social relations

This is the case for all multiplayer games and collaborative games, which allow you to have a good time together, which encourage sharing and the pleasure of playing in a group or with your partner; also one which makes it possible to develop intergenerational links.

Developing creativity

The game confronts us with new situations, sometimes difficult to intellectualize. The game pushes us to see things from another angle and in doing so we submit to mental gymnastics that boosts our creative abilities. It is not for nothing that the game is often used by companies specially designed to work creativity (advertising agencies, communication, etc.).

Curb aging

Games help maintain cognitive functions; in other words, the more we play, the more we use these cognitive functions and the more we preserve them. The game gives a revival of vivacity, a new breath, a kind of new youth … The play does not allow to age less, but to feel less old!.

Learn, cultivate

Some board games are used in adult training. This is the case in literacy and some school curricula in high school or university. These initiatives, however, remain isolated (although they are very popular with learners). In this context, the game can automate certain learning or inculcate new ones. It also helps to overcome the difficulty of learning by emphasizing the pleasure of playing together.

When you think about it, there is no good reason to deprive the adult of the benefits of playing alone, with partner or in groups.
